Sugar and salt 盐和糖

Staten island 在Richmond terrace有个盐厂 Atlantic salt, 给纽约市提供大部分除雪用盐。

每年冬天会在Staten island的码头上堆上一个20米高的小盐山。货船会从智利运来6万立方米的盐。3周的水程，要一周的时间来卸下所有盐。智利盐比较粗糙，肉色；墨西哥眼十分白；爱尔兰的偏棕；多美尼加共和国的比较绿。卸下盐后，这艘货船会在哥伦比亚载上煤炭回到智利。

3：30开始到傍晚八点半，卡车一辆接一辆地载着盐驶出。 盐从船到卡车只要一分钟，一个小时可以装满60个卡车。装满盐的卡车开往卫生局，分装在橘红色的袋子里。 使用的时候不会和沙混合，相比沙，盐不会堵塞下水道。

今年冬天天冷他们卖了30万吨。

每年会在盐厂会举办LUMEN艺术展 , 今年在6月。

糖

Brooklyn 有个糖厂 Domino sugar，最近挺热闹。因为要被拆新建了。最后做SHOP的方案。
Domino sugar 在布鲁克林的工厂1859年开始，是全美最大的糖厂，工厂2004年关闭。
新建的地方无疑是被gentrification了。

糖厂没了,盐厂还在，等Staten island有了地铁，盐厂也会搬家。

Salt

On Staten Island near Richmond terrace, there is s a Salt factory called Atlantic salt. It provide snow melting salt for New York city. 

Every winter, on the pier of Staten Island will be a 20m tall salt hill. Cargos ship 60,000 cubic m salt from Chile.  It takes 3 weeks to ship the salt and need a week to unload all the salt. Chile salt is more coarse and pink; Mexican salt is bright white; Irish salt is brown; Dominica salt has a hit of green. After the unload the salt,this cargo ship will be loaded with coal in Colombia back to Chile.

From 3:30am to evening 8:30,  trucks full of salt depart from there. One minute from cargo to truck, it fulls 60 trucks in an hour. All the trucks will go to sanitation station and bagged in orange bags.  It won't be mixed with sand when use, compare to sand, salt won't clog sewer. 

Every year, the salt factory has a Lumen art festival. This year will be in June.

Sugar

Brooklyn has a Domino Sugar, recently gets quite popular. Because it going to be demolished. SHOP did the proposal. 

Domino sugar was built  in 1859, is the largest sugar factory in the States.  The factory has been closed since 2004.

The new place is no doubt a gentrification site. 

Notes

While the sugar factory is gone, the salt factory is still there. When Staten Island has connected subway, the salt factory will be moved as well.
